Billmon Responds: Why Lamont Doesn't Matter

Fri Aug 04, 2006 at 05:16:59 AM PDT

Billmon has followed up on his controversial post of a few days ago with a new piece challenging the notion that conventional politics can rescue the nation from disaster.  Let Billmon first address those who believe the world's fate is bound up with CT primary or the '06 midterms so they can move on to the next poll diary without further troubling themselves with the unpleasantness of reality:

Jonathan Schell of The Nation has written an essay now available online about the United States' futile attempt to gain empire and the pernicious effects of its inevitable failure on domestic politics.

Who's Afraid of Big, Bad Election Fraud?

Sat Jun 17, 2006 at 10:36:24 AM PDT

Mark Crispin Miller has a long open letter to Salon that's interesting not so much for its review of the evidence that election fraud changed the 2004 Presidential election outcome, but for his analysis of why Manjoo, Kos and others have reacted so strongly against discussing the issue.

The key quote after the break.

Michelle Malkin Attacks Kos, YearlyKos, Kossacks

Tue May 30, 2006 at 10:19:22 PM PDT

If this has already been diaried, let me know and I'll delete.  I checked "Malkin" under search and found nothing for the last two days.

Nothing surprising here. But Yearly Kos is important enough that Michelle Malkin has expended quite a bit of effort to produce a hit piece.  It goes after Markos, Kossacks and the celebrity attendees.  She's even jealous of the NYT coverage a few days ago.

The garbage is here.  You can leave a comment if you think it's worth registering.

Expect to hear from O'Reilly, Rush and Cheney next.  They've released the hounds.

Iran: Oppose War AND Iran's Theocratic Regime

Mon May 29, 2006 at 06:20:58 AM PDT

Antiwar progressives now find themselves put in the uncomfortable position of combatting disinformation about Iran originating from pro-war forces while defending themselves from the accusation that they have become apologists for a repressive theocratic regime.  An impressive list of progressive leaders has come up with a solution: a strong antiwar statement that condemns Iran's human rights abuses while insisting that U. S. and other nations employ only peaceful means to encourage change.

The details and how you can join the effort after the break.

More PsyOps re: Iran: Two New DisInfo Stories

Sun May 21, 2006 at 03:43:01 AM PDT

Those advocating an attack on Iran now find themselves on the defensive after IAEA inspectors revealed that Iran's uranium enrichment program may have advanced very little in the past decade.  Neocons had hoped earlier reports of uranium enriched beyond the 5% necessary for power generation would be the "smoking gun" that would move their march toward war another big step forward, but that sample was traced back to material from China that had been sold to Iran in the early 90s.  It now appears, despite Iran's claims to the contrary, that Tehran's ability to enrich uranium for any purpose is quite limited.

Since that setback, the neocons have stepped up the disinformation campaign designed to incite war fever in the U. S., Israel and other nations like Canada and Australia who could be potential allies in an attack on Iran.  Some of the outrageous examples below the fold:

Some Good News About Iran--and Democrats

The confrontation between Washington and Tehran may have turned the corner this week as advocates for restraint managed to gain the upper hand even as the war hawks' disinformation campaign intensified.

Countdown to Iran War: New Attack Plans & Euro Peace Effort

Wed May 17, 2006 at 02:39:51 AM PDT

Today's European press coverage of the Bush administration's runup to war against Iran finds three European Union nations, Germany, France and Britain (EU3), scrambling to find a way to prevent war, while the United States modifies its attack plans to allow it to go ahead even with a complete lack of support in the international community.

Condi Vs. Cheney Over Iran, Russia

Mon May 15, 2006 at 04:34:46 AM PDT

London's Daily-Telegraph reported yesterday about a confrontation between U. S. Secretary of State Condi Rice and Russian foreign secretary Sergey Lavrov at last week's meeting about a U. N. sanctions resolution against Iran.  (The Washington Times reprinted most of the story today.) Lavrov was angry and confrontational because of Vice President Dick Cheney's remarks abour Russian made during stops earlier this month on a tour of former Soviet republics.

While important enough, especially in light of Valdimir Putin's "Comrade Wolf" speech, the dispute between Rice and Lavrov is overshadowed by what these right wing press outlets have to say about the relationship between Rice and Cheney.  It's detailed after the break.

Rapturists Whip Up Iran War Fever Among the Faithful

Sun May 14, 2006 at 05:47:50 AM PDT

Christian Right media outlets are doing their best to whip up Iran war fever among the faithful.  Jerusalem Online bills itself as:

Senate Dems Trying To Out-Hawk Bush On Iran

Thu May 11, 2006 at 05:53:32 AM PDT

There is good news and bad news to report on the efforts of Congressional Democrats to halt the Bush Administration's march to World War III.  First the good news:

(For those not yet up to speed on this critical issue, you can go here on why it is important for Democrats in Congress to do all they can to force Bush to take a preemptive attack, especially a nuclear one, off the table.)

The good, the bad and the ugly after the break.

Who Will Stop World War III?

Tue May 09, 2006 at 06:09:35 AM PDT

Since Seymour Hersh exposed the Bush administration's plans to attack Iran, the dKos community has recognized the gravity of this threat and responded more than 500 times with information, analysis and calls to action (since 4/08, 527 diaries and 6 articles where the words "Iran" and "nuclear" appear).  The level of interest and concern is more than justified by both the evidence that the Bush administration is determined to expand their "World War III" and also the disastrous consequences that would result for Americans, Iranians and the rest of the world.

In FAQs form below the fold, here are where things stand now:

"With George McGovern as President"(Dem Hist 101)

Sun May 07, 2006 at 05:24:55 AM PDT

The modern Democratic Party was born not in the distant past but in the battle for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1968.  As that year began, Democrat Lyndon Johnson sat in the Oval Office, Democrats had comfortable majorities in the House and Senate, and William O. Douglas was writing majority opinions for the Warren court.  New programs like Medicare and the War on Poverty were advancing economic equality a step beyond the New Deal, and the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act had finally begun to address America's shame of racial discrimination.  But all was not well in the republic.  It would take Democrats willing to fight other Democrats to end a tragic war and preserve the Constitution.

Where Are You When We Need You, George McGovern?

Sat May 06, 2006 at 04:47:47 AM PDT

When America called upon its sons and daughters to risk their lives to defend the country against Japan and Germany, where was George McGovern?  He was a student at Dakota Wesleyan, a small Methodist college, when he volunteered and was trained to pilot a B-24 bomber.  George named his plane the "Dakota Belle" in honor of his wife back home, and he took it and its crew on 35 missions over heavily defended Nazi targets.  His courage and skill won him a Distinguished Flying Cross and are remembered in Stephen Ambrose's Wild Blue.

Where's George now?  After the break...

21 Dem Senators Follow Santorum Into War With Iran

Wed May 03, 2006 at 05:37:34 AM PDT

Kossacks are rightly paying a lot of attention to what must surely qualify as the most critical issue of the moment: the march to war with Iran.  You're read how the Secretary of State is trying to bribe governments to use their airspace for an attack.  You've been pointed to Steve Clemons' warnings of imminent war.  And you've digested Juan Cole's passionate plea to rise up against this impending war.

What are the Democrats doing to stop this madness?

Is the Antiwar Movement in America Dead?

Mon May 01, 2006 at 03:57:23 AM PDT

Last Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted 397-21 for the Iran Freedom Support Act.  The mainstream press portrayed the bill as simply tightening sanctions against a renegade regime, but Dennis Kucinich, one of the 21 Congresspersons who voted against the act, called it,

a stepping stone to war.

The World's Most Dangerous Religion

Sat Mar 25, 2006 at 12:18:11 AM PDT

There is intense competition in the world right now for primacy in the category, "World's Most Dangerous Religion." Many progressives in the U. S., desperately fighting against anti-choice and anti-gay forces, would nominate Christianity. Members of the American right and even many otherwise liberal Europeans would make the case for Islam. But if you happen to be a Christian or Muslim who lives in India, chances are that your candidate for most dangerous religion would be Hinduism. Then there are the West Bank Palestinians who have lost their homes to Israeli "settlers" and suggest Judaism is the most dangerous.

So which really poses the biggest threat to human life and liberty? See my nominee on the flip.
